Barcelona fringe player Arda Turan will only be allowed to leave the club for a fee that could rival the controversial sale of Luis Figo to Real Madrid in July 2000.

The Ballon d’Or winner from 2000 departed Camp Nou for a then-world record fee of €60 million, a sum which remains as the most expensive sale in the history of the club.

Luis Figo’s transfer from Barcelona to Real Madrid is arguably the most controversial move of all time. Upon returning to the Camp Nou, Figo was met with a hostile reception from the Barcelona fans, who put up banners with words such as ‘Scum’ and ‘Judas’. His next appearance at the Camp Nou came in 2002, when a fan infamously threw a pig’s head onto the pitch when Figo went to take a corner

Barcelona have reportedly set an asking price of €65 million for the Turkish international, but after some quick adjustments with an inflation (CPI) calculator, we find that this would not stand as the club’s record sale should a buyer be found.

Luis Figo’s €60 million sale from 2000 works out to be roughly €76 million in today’s money, meaning that a possible Arda Turan sale would rank as the club’s second most expensive departure.

But who would be willing to pay such a sum for a 30-year-old? After all, he’s hardly featured on a consistent basis for Barcelona since joining from Atletico Madrid in 2016.

In fact, he made just 20 starts in all competitions last season, 14 of which came in La Liga.

His talents are undeniable, but the astronomical starting price that Barcelona have set is simply unreasonable.

That hasn’t stopped rumours of a host of potential European suitors for Turan, namely Arsenal and Besiktas.

Reports suggest that Turan is content to stay at the club and return to training on July 12, when new Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde takes over.
