Barcelona are set to make their first piece of transfer business ahead of the 2017/18 campaign by activating the release clause of Gerard Deulofeu.

The Everton man, who spent the second half of last season on loan at AC Milan, has a release clause of just £10.5 million.

Gerard Deulofeu wrote an open letter to Everton fans following the conclusion of his loan spell in 2014, saying, “I am proud and fulfilled with my year at Everton, having both helped the club and hoping that the fans enjoyed my football.”

Gerard Deulofeu left the Catalan club for Everton on a loan basis in 2013, making quite a decent impact for the Merseysiders in his 29 appearances over the course of the 2013/14 season, scoring four times.

A second loan spell, this time to La Liga outfit Sevilla the following season, was considered largely unproductive, with Spanish newspaper Marca going as far as including Deulofeu in their ‘worst team of the season’.

Gerard Deulofeu returned to Everton ahead of the 2015/16 campaign, this time making the deal permanent in a £4.2 million transfer.

The miniscule transfer sum represented solid business by Everton, especially considering they were signing a player whom they knew quite well from his previous stay with the club.

Barcelona obviously reserved some thought for the development of the then 21-year-old, as they placed a buy-back option at a relatively modest sum of £10.5 million.

The placement of the clause in his contract was win-win for Everton; if he succeeded, he would not only help the on-field performances of the club, but return a decent profit should Barcelona want him back.

However, Deulofeu failed to make an impression on new manager Ronald Koeman, who hastily shipped the Spaniard to AC Milan after just four Premier League starts last season.

Gerard Deulofeu responded with some inspired performances for Milan, scoring four and assisting three in his 17 Serie A appearances.

Those performances have now caught the attention of the club where he signed his first professional contract, Barcelona.
