AS Monaco left-back Benjamin Mendy is about to become the world’s most expensive defensive signing.
That’s the report coming from James Robson of Manchester Evening News, who claims that Manchester City have come to an agreement with AS Monaco over a whopping £52 million transfer for Benjamin Mendy.
Pep Guardiola’s sense of urgency to cover the full-back positions is understandable after both the sub-par options he had at his disposal last season and the mass exodus to follow this summer window.
This season, however, he can have no complaints.
Just last week he secured the signing of Kyle Walker, arguably the best right-back in the Premier League, and did so in another near-record breaking deal for defenders: a £45 million transfer with the potential to reach £50 million depending on Manchester City’s performance this season.
Fast forward to one week later and Guardiola is on the verge of making Benjamin Mendy the most expensive defender in football history.
Pep Guardiola is eager to add the Frenchman to his pre-season training camp in Los Angeles, where Manchester City have thus far played just the one game: a 2-0 loss to bitter rivals Manchester United.
Manchester City are also believed to be close to wrapping up a deal for Real Madrid full-back Danilo, who was previously thought to be joining Premier League champions Chelsea.
