Chelsea have landed their first major acquisition of the summer by striking a deal for AS Roma defender Antonio Rudiger.
The German international signs on a five-year deal for £29 million – a transfer fee which could rise to £34 million depending on add-ons – and will wear the number two shirt.
“It’s a great feeling because not every player has the opportunity to join a huge club like this,” said Rudiger in his first interview as a Chelsea player.
“I am looking forward to meeting up with my new team-mates and I’m very proud to officially become a Chelsea player.”
Rudiger spent his last two seasons as a key defender for Roma, making 72 appearances and helping the side to a second-place finish in Serie A last season.
The 24-year-old most recently turned out for Germany at the Confederations Cup, where he made four appearances as Die Mannschaft won the tournament for the second time.
Antonio Rudiger comes in after the departure of club legend John Terry to Aston Villa, and adds to a stellar line-up of defensive options for Antonio Conte.
