Football is full of overrated players. Every year a couple of new Argentines arrive in Europe being tagged as the New Maradona and then fade into oblivion. There are others that are sold for over 25 millions and never prove their worth beyond may be 5 million dollars. Some are more about fashion then football itself. Who do you think is really the most overrated football player of our generation?
In my personal opinion, David Beckham was pretty overrated. I mean, he is a good human being, a good looking person, a great teammate, a good freekick taker, nut just an okey player. But the English press praises him as if he is one of the best in history. He certainly doesn't come in my list of top 20 players of the last decade. Common, players like Ryan Giggs, Luis Figo and Roberto Carlos were far more talented and effective in the field then Beckham. But I do like Beckham as a player. Just saying he is over-sold.
The other play who I think is overrated is Raul Gonzalez. I have never been impressed by him. To me he is a pretty mediocre striker. But you do have to respect someone who had served football for so long.
What do you guys think? Who do you think are the most overrated football players?
I think Pele is the most overated player. He was part of a very good Brazilian team. He did score many goals, but certainly wasn't the greatest player of all times. Its one thing to win a trophy for your team, and another thing to just be a part of a winning team. I think Maradona is 10 times better than Pele when it comes to pure footballing abilities.
I think in terms of this generation's football, I found Zidane to be a bit overrated. With Exceptions in 2001/02 and 2006 WC, I dont see what made Zidane so special? Real Madrid were not performing exceptionally and he didn't produce spectacular performances after he came to Madrid.
I also find Zlatan Ibrahimovic to be a bit overrated.
Ibrahimovic is certalnly overrated. I almost mentioned his name after Raul but thought its a little too early to discount him. He certainly is having a complex at Barcelona where everyone else is much more talented than him. Even Henry is mostly off color at Barca.
Regarding Zindae, he is one player who was probably never exceptional at the surface, but his impact in a game is much deeper. He is one of the very few players who makes people around him look good without overdoing anything. If you look at France vs Brazil game of WC 2006 and analyze every movement and passes of Zidane, he was outstanding. But considering that he doesn't do much dribble or outrun any defenders, he may not look that impressive if you are just looking superficially. He is what you call a true playmaker. Riquelme is another but not as strong and consistent as Zidane.
Agree up here with the Ibra part.
I also agree with Ibra being overrated, but Pele and Zidane??? Those are some of the best players in Futbol history.
I completely disagree with the Pele or ZIdane arguments, they were both great players in different eras. I dont think that players can be rated as in "Best Player Ever" because the game changes, but you can rate players from different era's. Decades is maybe a better judging criteria. I would say that Wayne Rooney is probably one of the most overrated players, the fact that he plays for Manchester United in a powerful league doesnt qualify him for the praise ive been hearing about him. Lionel Messi has well-deserved praise, Wayne Rooney is a victim of English hype.
I personally think that Ronaldo is way overrated, except in his own mind. He did nothing during the WC and is certainly not a leader of his team in the fashion of Schweinsteiger or Xavi
Frank Lampard and John Terry! Either 1 of those. They're not that good as the British press wants them to be.
