Barcelona have revealed their successor to Luis Enrique by naming former Athletic Bilbao coach Ernesto Valverde as manager heading into the 2017/18 season.

Valverde might not have the resume of a Pep Guardiola or Carlo Ancelotti, but he has managed some admirable achievements with his former clubs. He took Espanyol to a UEFA Cup Final in 2007, losing on penalties to Sevilla, and dismantled Barcelona 5-1 across two legs in Athletic Bilbao’s Supercopa win in 2015

Valverde is an experienced manager who has spent all but three seasons of his career, as both a player and manager, in his native Spain.

He has managed Espanyol, Villarreal, Valencia and Athletic Bilbao in Spain, and spent three seasons in Greece across two different spells with Olympiakos.

His time abroad yielded the most successful era of his managerial career to date, winning three Superleague titles and two Greek cups.

Valverde’s trophy cabinet is rather bare when analysing honours collected in his native country, which includes just a Supercopa de Espana in 2015 with Bilbao, but he also hasn’t had the chance to manage a club the size of Barcelona in the past.

Valverde is also a former Barcelona player, having spent two years with the Catalan giants, where he won the Copa del Rey and UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup.

“Valverde has the knowledge and experience we were looking for and he loves youth football,” said Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu.

“He has a special style and a philosophy which is similar to Barca’s. He’s a very hard worker, he coaches the way we like to coach.”

“There are many reasons why we chose him.”

Valverde has signed a two-year deal with the option of an additional year included.
