In one of the more surprising stories of the summer, Atletico Madrid striker Fernando Torres could be moving to Liga MX side Queretaro on a free transfer.

Fernando Torres’ form in 2008 earned him a third-place finish in the Ballon d’Or. He scored 33 goals in all competitions with Liverpool and won the European Championships with Spain, scoring the winner against Germany in the Final. Since departing for Chelsea in 2011, Torres managed league goal tallies in the double-figures mark just once, for Atletico Madrid in 2015/16 (scoring 11)

The 33-year-old’s contract is up and depending on confirmation of his ability to leave Atletico Madrid due to their transfer ban, could be announced as a Queretaro player as early as next week.

Atletico have deemed Torres surplus to requirements even though they will be unable to bring in any new players over the summer, which has broken down negotiations between themselves and Olympique Lyonnais striker Alexandre Lacazette.

Torres made 31 appearances in La Liga this season, scoring eight times and assisting five, but only 13 of those showings were from the starting line-up.

The transfer to Queretaro would be the second time Torres has left Atletico Madrid in his career, the first coming ten years ago when he completed a £20 million transfer to Liverpool.

Torres has achieved a multitude of success throughout his career, winning the European Championships twice and the World Cup with his country, as well as a UEFA Champions League crown with Chelsea.

However, his trophy cabinet at Atletico Madrid is rather bare, having not won anything other than a Segunda Division title from 2001.
