Bayern Munich will be without French winger Franck Ribery for the rest of the year after the Bundesliga side confirmed cruciate ligament damage for the 34-year-old.

Franck Ribery was helped off the field in obvious discomfort at the hour mark of Bayern Munich’s 2-2 draw with Hertha Berlin.

While the 81-time capped French international won’t require surgery, a splint will be placed in his knee for several weeks before a further decision can be made on his rehabilitation.

No return date was confirmed from Bayern Munich but a lateral collateral ligament rupture usually takes between eight to ten weeks for a full recovery.

Franck Ribery celebrated his 10th anniversary at Bayern Munich in June. He has scored 112 times and assisted 175 in 362 appearances for the club, having won seven Bundesliga titles, five German Cups, a FIFA Club World Cup and a UEFA Champions League.

“We are sorry that Franck has injured himself. We wish him a speedy and good recovery,” said Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.

News of the Frenchman’s long-term absence will come as a major blow for the Bavarians, who are already without first-choice goalkeeper Manuel Neuer until January.

Bayern Munich are enduring a tumultuous spell following the hammering from Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League and subsequent sacking of Carlo Ancelotti.

The defending champions sit in second spot in the Bundesliga after back-to-back draws against Wolfsburg and Hertha Berlin, the latter of which was a 2-0 lead squandered to finish 2-2.
