Gareth Southgate has selected 26 players for England’s World Cup Qualifying matches against Slovenia and Lithuania in October.

Several England regulars miss out due to injury, such as Adam Lallana, Danny Rose, Nathaniel Clyne, Jamie Vardy and Danny Welbeck, leaving Southgate frustrated heading into the last two games of qualifying.

“If you were to say, ‘Am I entirely happy with the squad I’ve named?’ then no, because we’ve got too many good players missing with injury.”

The biggest surprise to come from the squad is the return of Manchester City’s Fabian Delph, who hasn’t represented The Three Lions since November 2015.

Since moving to Manchester City from Aston Villa in 2015 for £8 million, Fabian Delph has started just 10 games in the Premier League, halting his ability to build on the nine caps he has for England. Though he came off the bench to score a fantastic effort against Crystal Palace in the league and started in the UEFA Champions League against Shakhtar Donetsk, he hasn’t started a Premier League game since April.

Fabian Delph has enjoyed more playing time at club level recently, starting at left-back in Manchester City’s 2-0 win over Shakhtar Donetsk in the UEFA Champions League.

Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster has earned a recall after keeping three clean sheets in his six matches in the Premier League, while Jack Butland and Joe Hart retain their places.

Leicester City defender Harry Maguire keeps his place after earning a call-up in the last England squad, but he is yet to make his debut after being withdrawn from the final matchday squad of 23 against Malta and Slovakia.

In-form Tottenham striker Harry Kane will spearhead the side, having scored nine goals in his last five games at club level.

Though Harry Kane hasn’t yet been able to translate his club form onto the international stage, he has 10 goals from 22 caps for The Three Lions.

England are five points clear of Slovakia in their World Cup qualifying group and can guarantee a direct passage to next year’s finals in Russia with a victory over Slovenia.
