The controversy created by Gianluigi Donnarumma in June has ended with the Italian international agreeing terms to a contract extension with AC Milan.

“In the end, the club and the goalkeeper have reached an agreement to extend Gianluigi Donnarumma’s contract,” read a statement on AC Milan’s official website.

Gianluigi Donnarumma is already a full international for the Italian national team and, at 17 years and six months, was the youngster player to be called up for the Azzurri since 1911

Donnarumma, 18, is reported to earn €6 million per year in a contract upgrade that commits him to the seven-time European Champions until 2021.

AC Milan have ensured that their goalkeeping prodigy will not go cheaply should he seek another move away from the club by slapping a release clause in the region of €70-100 million on him.

Should Milan fail to qualify for the Champions League, then Donnarumma will be available at a slightly more affordable release clause of €50 million.

Some of Europe’s biggest clubs were contemplating a move for Donnarumma after his agent Mino Raiola informed Milan of a ‘definitive’ decision not to renew his contract just over three weeks ago.

The change of heart comes as a huge boost to AC Milan’s plans heading into the new campaign, having already completed a near-complete squad change with seven key signings.
