Liverpool are trying to secure a deal with Roma over the transfer of Mohamed Salah, and will increase their initial offer of £28 million to £35 million.

Mohamed Salah was close to joining Liverpool in 2014, saying, “I was waiting for Liverpool because I really like Liverpool. I was eager to join then. But then I received a phone call from Jose Mourinho and that changed everything.”

The Egyptian international is one of Jurgen Klopp’s priority targets this summer as he seeks to add more pace to the side.

Salah enjoyed his most prolific season in 2016/17, scoring 19 times from 41 appearances in all competitions for Roma, and was the club’s second top-scorer behind Edin Dzeko.

Salah is well known to English fans after his brief and unsuccessful spell with Chelsea in 2014, scoring twice from 19 appearances, failing to secure a regular spot in the side.

The Reds are in need of an additional wide player, as Sadio Mane was their only recognised winger in the 2016/17 campaign, and they were reminded of this when the Senegalese international departed in January for the African Cup of Nations.

While the transfer would solve one of Liverpool’s problems in the short-term, a long-term issue would arise if further reinforcements were not made by the club.

There will be no African Cup of Nations in the 2017/18 campaign, meaning Liverpool fans won’t have to worry about suffering from a depleted squad in January, but the competition will return during the 2018/19 campaign.

If Liverpool were to go into that season with Mane and Salah as their only wingers then the exact same problem from this season would appear once again.

Liverpool do have Lazar Markovic on the books following the end of his loan spell with Hull City, but it remains unclear whether Jurgen Klopp has faith in the abilities of the 23-year-old.

Jurgen Klopp has been handed a £150 million transfer budget for the summer after guiding Liverpool to the Champions League, and has already secured the signing of Under 20 World Cup winner Dominic Solanke from Chelsea for £3 million.

  1. First off I would like to say wonderful blog! I had a quick question in which I’d like to ask if you don’t mind. I was interested to know how you center yourself and clear your head prior to writing. I have had a hard time clearing my mind in getting my ideas out. I do enjoy writing but it just seems like the first 10 to 15 minutes are generally wasted just trying to figure out how to begin. Any recommendations or hints? Cheers!
