Jurgen Klopp was left in frustration as Liverpool were shut down by Jose Mourinho’s Red Devils at Anfield for the second season in a row, having to settle with a 0-0 draw.

The goalless draw wasn’t without its moments, though, with Joel Matip nearly turning into an unlikely hero for the hosts when Roberto Firmino crafted a glorious opening. David de Gea was at his best between the Manchester United sticks, saving the point-blank range strike with his foot to help the visitors on their way to a point at Anfield.

Premier League Player Ratings: Liverpool vs. Manchester United

liverpool

liverpoolSimon Mignolet – 7/10

Made just the one save, but an important one in the context of the result; Romelu Lukaku was played through into a one-on-one with his compatriot, but the Liverpool keeper stayed focused to swat his attempt away on the stroke of half-time.

liverpoolJoe Gomez – 7/10

An encouraging display from the 20-year-old, bouncing back from a wayward performance at Newcastle in a high-pressure atmosphere. Put in a few key tackles and nearly provided a match-winning assist for Emre Can.

liverpoolJoel Matip – 6.5/10

Saw a lot of the ball and was efficient with his simple distribution. Guilty of spurning the game’s best chance when his side-footed effort from inside the six-yard box was somehow kept out by David de Gea.

liverpoolDejan Lovren – 7.5/10

Wore Romelu Lukaku like a glove, staying tight to the United marksman and pressuring his every touch. Worked well, but the Croatian was aided by the lack of support for the Belgian striker.

liverpoolAlberto Moreno – 6/10

A heavy first touch prevented him from playing a potentially dangerous cross after Philippe Coutinho slid him into the area, but ended up too wide and blazed his cross past everyone. Dealt with Ashley Young reasonably well.

liverpoolJordan Henderson – 6.5/10

Had more touches of the ball (112) than any other player on the pitch, dropping between his centre-halves to ensure Liverpool always had a passing option, and played four key passes.

liverpoolGeorginio Wijnaldum – 6.5/10

Often moved into the channels to draw United defenders away from a crowded centre, but fired daisy cutters at David de Gea when he got into advanced positions.

liverpoolEmre Can – 7.5/10

Offered much-needed penetration from the middle with his lung-busting runs and should have broken the deadlock when Joe Gomez’s perfect cross found him late in the second half. Also put in four tackles in what was an all-action display.

liverpoolPhilippe Coutinho – 6/10

Not as his electric best, rather offering glimpses of his ability with a few intricate touches on the ball and one incisive pass for Alberto Moreno in the first half. Well held by Antonio Valencia.

liverpoolRoberto Firmino – 7/10

Some quick feet in the box created the game’s best chance, but unfortunately for the hosts, it fell to the wrong player: Joel Matip. The Brazilian made more key passes (5) than any other player on the pitch.

liverpoolMohamed Salah – 7/10

The liveliest of Liverpool players in the first half and the most likely to make something happen, Mohamed Salah could not sustain his early momentum in the second half before being subbed off for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
