Olympique Lyonnais have denied rumours Real Madrid have a buy-back clause for Dominican Republic striker Mariano Diaz.

The 24-year-old departed for the Ligue 1 outfit for €8 million over the summer after five years with the back-to-back European champions, though he only ever made 14 appearances for the senior team.

Mariano Diaz has hit the ground running with Olympique Lyonnais, scoring seven times in Ligue 1 from nine appearances – the joint-top scorer for the club and joint-third in the division alongisde Nabil Fekir. Only Edinson Cavani and Radamel Falcao have scored more goals in Ligue 1 this season.

Various Spanish sources suggested Real Madrid had first say on a future return for the Lyon striker, though the club have categorically denied those allegations via a statement on their official website.

“Olympique Lyonnais wish to point out there was no repurchase clause in the transfer of Mario Diaz, contrary to some assertions made by some in the Spanish media,” read part of the statement.

“Olympique Lyonnais explained precisely the terms of the transfer in its press release of 30 July, 2017, namely the transfer amount of 8 million euros plus 35% interest on the capital gain of a potential future transfer.”

Mariano has adjusted well to life in France, netting seven times from nine matches in Ligue 1 to lead the club’s scoring charts alongside Nabil Fekir.
