Manchester United have officially announced the signing of Serbian midfielder Nemanja Matic from Chelsea.
Matic, 29, signs on a three-year contract with the option to extend for a further year.
The two-time Premier League winner reunites with Jose Mourinho in an initial £35 million transfer which could rise to £40 million depending on various bonuses.
“Nemanja is a Manchester United player and a Jose Mourinho player. He represents everything we want in a footballer: loyalty, consistency, ambition, team player,” said Jose Mourinho.
Manchester United needed to add quality in depth this season as they return to the Champions League, and while the acquisition of Romelu Lukaku and Victor Lindelof was a massive boost, the signing of Matic could prove to be their most importance piece of business this summer.
The reason for this trail of thought is simple: Manchester United don’t currently have a midfielder in Matic’s mould in their current squad.
In fact, the lack of a natural defensive midfielder caused Jose Mourinho all kinds of problems in the early stages of last season.
He often deployed Paul Pogba and Marouane Fellaini as a double pivot, an awkward and unnatural position for both, until Ander Herrera showed his versatility to drop deep and show positional discipline.
Mourinho will need no such experimental period this season after signing a player he knows well, and perhaps one who will help unleash the full potential of record-signing Paul Pogba.
