Manchester United have officially confirmed the signing of Swedish defender Victor Lindelof for £30.75 million (€35 million) from Benfica.

Lindelof, 22, attracted the attention of The Red Devils since the winter transfer window, with news breaking around January that Benfica president Luis Filipe Viera flew to Manchester to discuss terms over the Swedish international.

The transfer is confirmed, subject to a medical examination, international clearance and personal terms, wrapping up Manchester United’s first piece of business this transfer window.

Victor Lindelof won the 2015 European Championship at under 21 level with Sweden and was named in the Team of the Tournament. He went on to earn his first cap for the senior team in March 2016, and played all three games of the group stage for Sweden at the European Championship in France

He adds more experience to the squad than his age might suggest, though, having won three Primeira Liga titles with Benfica, featuring in all eight Champions League fixtures with the club this season and representing Sweden during the European Championships in France last year.

Described as quick, confident and strong on the ball, Lindelof has drawn comparisons to Rio Ferdinand from fellow Swede and United treble-winner Jesper Blomqvist.

“He’s a mature player and a mature person. One thing I do like about him is that he hasn’t gone an easy route with his career,” said Blomqvist.

“I think making the decision to go to Portugal at that age and making a success of it and then doing what he did for the (Sweden) under 21’s shows the character of the player.”

The signing mirrors aspects of Eric Bailly’s arrival last summer. Bailly had only made 46 first team appearances for Villarreal, and 51 overall when including his time at Espanyol, before moving over to United in a £30 million deal.

Lindelof finishes his Benfica career with 79 appearances and two goals since joining in 2011 from hometown club Vasteras.
