Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante has added another prestigious accolade to his personal collection by being named the Football Writers’ Association Player of the Year.

N’Golo Kante has accumulated the most interceptions (235) and tackles (289) in the last two Premier League seasons combined, a statistic revealing his importance to the midfield of both Leicester and Chelsea.

Kante, 26, had already secured the PFA Players’ Player of the Year award and was named in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year for the second season in a row.

A title-winner with Leicester City last season, Kante has picked up where he left off with The Foxes by playing an integral role in a Chelsea side that need just three points from their final three fixtures to secure the title.

“With so many great players in this Chelsea squad and in the Premier League, for the Football Writers’ Association to name me their Footballer of the Year is a very proud moment in my career,” said Kante.

He has played in all but two of Chelsea’s league fixtures this term, showing the tenacity and work rate that prompted The Blues to splash £32 million on a player considered a virtual unknown to the football world just a few seasons ago.

His defensive contributions haven’t wavered, registering 113 tackles from 33 league games (a total which places him second only to Everton’s Idrissa Gueye) but it’s his efficiency in possession that reveals how Kante has taken his game to the next level.

The Frenchman has maintained a top ten ranking passing accuracy ratio in the Premier League at 88.7%, a number that is up there with the likes of Yaya Toure, Michael Carrick, Juan Mata and Moussa Dembele, who all rank as some of the tidiest passers in the competition.

Kante’s well-deserved recognition by the FWA is the first to go to a more defence-oriented player since Scott Parker, who took out the 2011 award after a stellar season at West Ham. Kante was closely followed by Chelsea teammate Eden Hazard and Dele Alli in the poll, who finished 2nd and 3rd, respectively.
