Former Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina is on the verge of a return to the English Premier League, according to James Ducker of the Daily Telegraph.

The report suggests the World Cup winner is close to a Manchester City move after Napoli rejected an opening bid of £2.6 million, but that a deal should be struck so long as City raise their offer to £4.4 million.

Pepe Reina was Liverpool’s first-choice goalkeeper for 8 seasons, keeping a total of 134 clean sheets from 285 Premier League appearances. He won the Golden Glove award three times in a row from 2005 to 2008, a record shared with Joe Hart, who won three in a row from 2010 to 2013

Pepe Reina’s arrival at the Etihad Stadium would complete an overhaul of Pep Guardiola’s squad in the goalkeeping department; he had Joe Hart and Willy Caballero when he arrived at the club just last summer.

With the former a medical away from joining West Ham and the latter already a Chelsea player, Guardiola will also need to find a suitor for Chilean goalkeeper Claudio Bravo if an agreement is found regarding Pepe Reina.

At 34 years old, Reina has been one of Serie A’s most prominent goalkeepers over the past few seasons, with only Gianluigi Buffon keeping more clean sheets (33) than the Spaniard (27) since the start of the 2015/16 season.

However, Reina would occupy a back-up role to Brazilian goalkeeper Ederson at Manchester City, similar to his season-long deputy spell to Manuel Neuer at Bayern Munich in 2014.
