Former Manchester United captain and Republic of Ireland international Roy Keane has lambasted Jose Mourinho for underperforming in his first season as Red Devils boss.

Manchester United currently sit in 6th in the Premier League with an outside chance of securing a top-four finish, but have the Europa League as their priority route to the Champions League.

The Europa League is one of the few trophies missing from Manchester United’s cabinet, but they have won a previous version of the competition known as the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1991.

Keane is unimpressed by Mourinho’s ambition, though, saying that even a League Cup and Europa League winning season is not up to standard for a club the size of Manchester United.

“They are now sixth in the league, I think they are 19 points behind Chelsea. The manager and the players should be embarrassed by that,” said Keane.

“With the squad they have and the players they have, the money they have spent, it’s not good enough.”

Jose Mourinho secured four key signings last summer for a cumulative fee of approximately £149 million, with the form of world record purchase Paul Pogba the talking point for most of the season.

“Mourinho has come up with plenty of excuses over the last few months, but there is no reason why United should shy away from dealing with these challenges.”

“For a club like Man United to win the League Cup and the Europa League, with the teams that are in it, you would expect them to do that.”

Keane’s harsh assessment of Mourinho’s first season is understandable in the context of the era that he played in at the club; he enjoyed seven Premier League titles, four FA Cups and a Champions League crown in the colours of Manchester United.

Perhaps his judgments should be saved for when, or if, Jose Mourinho can guide United back into the Champions League, especially given the Portuguese manager’s record in Europe.
