Liverpool’s 1984 European Cup-winning skipper Graeme Souness believes his former club will be facing a Real Madrid side that are on the slide in Saturday’s Champions League Final in Kiev.
There is a growing belief on the red half of Merseyside that the Anfield club can secure a sixth success in the competition, buoyed by the form of Egyptian forward Mo Salah, who has hit 42 goals this campaign.
Real ended their La Liga campaign at the weekend, surrendering a two-goal advantage to draw 2-2 at Villarreal to finish third, a distant 17 points behind champions Barcelona.
Gareth Bale – who looks back to form and fitness – and Cristiano Ronaldo, with his 44th goal in 43 appearances this term, were on target although Souness is unimpressed by the Portuguese forward’s contribution this term.
“He spends a lot of time on his bum now, complaining he’s been fouled, and plays the width of the box,” the Scot said. “He’s still capable of great things but, like Real, nowhere near where he was even 12 months ago.”
