FIFA will use its updated October World Rankings to seed all four pots for the 2018 World Cup draw, with the places of nations in Pot 1 confirmed.

This is a new format for World Cup seeding; usually, only the top eight nations are seeded with the rest of the pots grouped by Confederation.

Spain’s Pot 2 positioning presents the potential for a range of ‘Group of Death’ scenario’s; they can draw dangerous sides from Pot 1 such as Brazil, Germany and France – teams they would hope to have avoided until the knockout stages.

Noticeable by their absence in Pot 1 are 2010 World Champions Spain, whose drop down the FIFA rankings means they’ll have to settle for a spot in Pot 2.

This comes despite a strong World Cup Qualifying campaign for Julen Lopetegui’s side, who finished undefeated with nine wins and one draw, and a projected jump to 8th in FIFA’s updated World Rankings on Monday still won’t be enough for a Pot 1 berth.

That spot will go to hosts Russia (currently ranked 64th), who have an automatic seeded spot, meaning Spain will join Colombia, England, Uruguay, Mexico and three teams yet to be determined in Pot 2.

The 2018 FIFA World Cup draw takes place on Friday, December 1.

Confirmed nations in Pot 1

Russia, Germany, Brazil, Portugal, Argentina, Belgium, Poland, France
