A run of poor results has put heat on Vincenzo Montella’s position as AC Milan manager with the board considering their options.

Sky Italia journalist Manuele Baiocchini claims that AC Milan expect Vincenzo Montella to collect maximum points from his next two games against Genoa and Chievo.

Failure to do so could result in the termination of his contract and swift replacement from either former Fiorentina manager Paulo Sousa or seasoned campaigner Cesare Prandelli.

AC Milan won nine of their first 10 fixtures of the 2017/18 campaign, scoring 25 goals and conceding just seven. Since then, they’ve lost three Serie A games in a row (against Sampdoria, Roma and Inter) and drew a blank in a goalless stalemate to Greek Superleague side AEK Athens in the UEFA Europa League.

The haste of his potential sacking so early in the season would be somewhat understandable given the significant investment from the club over the summer, splashing almost €200 million to revamp the squad and challenge on all fronts.

Conversely, Vincenzo Montella was always going to need time to allow his new signings to form an understanding and a sustained turnaround in results was never likely to be the case.

Following AC Milan’s 0-0 draw with AEK Athens in the UEFA Europa League – their fourth failure to win in their last five matches in all competitions – the Italian called for calm despite the jeering and whistles heard at the San Siro after the game.

“I urge the fans and the club to stand by us and above all these players, who need to be embraced more than jeered during this difficult time,” said the AC Milan boss.

AC Milan have lost their last three games in Serie A, including the recent 3-2 setback against fierce rivals Inter Milan, and are 12 points behind pacesetters Napoli in 10th spot after eight games.
