Virgil van Dijk may have remained at Southampton after a drawn out summer of flirting with a move to Liverpool, but the Dutch international is keen to try his luck again when the January transfer window opens.

Liverpool were forced to back off and apologise to Southampton for allegedly making illegal contact with the player in June, while the 26-year-old saw his efforts to force a move via a transfer request shut down by The Saints.

Virgil van Dijk swiftly established himself as one of the most reliable centre-halves in the Premier League after a £13 million move from Celtic in 2015. His debut for The Netherlands followed, where he now has 12 caps, but his 2016/17 season was cut short due to an ankle injury. He has only recently returned to action for Southampton, starting his first Premier League game since January in the 2-1 loss to Stoke City on the weekend.

Despite having over five years left on his Southampton contract, Virgil van Dijk appears optimistic on his chances of securing a move away from the club.

“I wanted to make a step up, but Southampton did not want to sell me. But you’re a professional, so now I’ll give everything to the club,” the Dutchman said to Fox Sports.

“Halfway through the season, maybe we can see what’s possible.”

Virgil van Dijk’s obvious desire to move on must come as a sign for the defensive horror show that is Liverpool.

The Reds were flying after hammering Arsenal 4-0 in August but have won only one of their next four Premier League games, scoring five times and conceding nine – with five of those coming in the abysmal 5-0 thrashing from Manchester City.
