Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere could miss out on England’s World Cup squad after being ruled out of the Three Lions’ friendly in the Netherlands.
He did not travel to Amsterdam after sustaining a knee injury in training.
The 26-year-old, who is out of contract in the summer, was hoping to win his first England cap since the last 16 exit to Iceland at Euro 2016.
But his latest problem highlighted the risk manager Gareth Southgate would be taking by including the injury-plagued Wilshere in his squad.
Southgate is hopeful Wilshere will recover in time to play some part in Tuesday’s friendly against Italy at Wembley.
“It’s difficult for me to say when he will report back because he’s more experienced with it than I am, but it’s definitely not a big problem. We just have to see how it settles. It’s ongoing,” said Southgate.
Capped 34 times, Wilshere’s talent as never been in dispute but his lacklustre fitness record – he has made only 17 Premier League appearances this term – means his selection would be a risk.
